A lorry driver, Neil Platt, 43, has been jailed for 10 years for causing the death of Danny Aitchison, 46, after crashing into his car on the M58 in Lancashire on 17 May 2024.
Platt, who pleaded guilty, was distracted by scrolling pornography and social media on his phone moments before the collision. Aitchison’s car was pushed into the rear of a tanker and exploded.
Judge Ian Unsworth described Platt as a “multi-tonne accident waiting to happen” and said he ignored road laws over a long journey. Platt will serve two-thirds of his sentence in custody and faces a seven-year driving ban upon release.

Aitchison’s family described the impact of his death as devastating.
