Belarus sentences former embassy worker and wife of British diplomat Yulia Fenner to 7 years

A 52-year-old citizen of Belarus and Britain, Yulia Fenner, was detained last spring while crossing the border. The woman was accused of "promoting extremist activity" and "participation in protests" and sentenced to a colony.

Human rights activists recognized her as a political prisoner, writes "Viasna".

Yulia Fenner holds dual citizenship - Belarusian and British. She was detained at the border on March 31, 2024, while attempting to enter Belarus.

She was charged under two articles of the Criminal Code: part 2 of Article 342 (active participation in actions that grossly violate public order) and parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 (promotion of extremist activity). However, the specifics of the charges are unknown to human rights activists. She was placed in pre-trial detention pending trial.

As a result, on August 21 this year, Yulia was sentenced to seven years in prison.

In the early 2000s, Yulia worked at the British Embassy in Minsk. She married Martin Fenner, the deputy head of mission.

After Belarus, the family lived in Turkmenistan and Yekaterinburg, Russia, where Martin was stationed.
