The athlete and another individual are being investigated over the incident that occurred on a street in the early hours of Saturday morning

A sports personality is suspected of involvement in an assault that left a man with severe injuries in the early hours of Saturday morning.

We’ve learned that this individual, along with another man, are under investigation for the attack on a street in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Neither the sports figure nor his associate have been arrested by Gardai investigating the incident, but sources have confirmed they are both considered suspects.

The victim is critically ill in hospital following the assault. Around 2.50am, detectives received reports of a man lying in the street outside a pub on Tucker Street in the Co Mayo town.

He was transported to Mayo University Hospital and the scene was preserved for examination. Sources also indicate the man has now been moved to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin - a specialist centre for treating serious head injuries, reports the Irish Mirror.

Gardai stated that investigations are ongoing and have appealed for witnesses to step forward.

Any road users or individuals with camera footage (including dash-cam) in the Tucker Street area between 2.30am and 3.15am have been asked to make this footage available to investigating gardai.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or alternatively they can reach out to any Garda station. It’s also understood officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the street around the time of the assault.
