Andriy Portnov, former advisor to ex-Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, shot dead near Madrid
Former Yanukovych adviser Andriy Portnov was shot near Madrid.

In recent years, Portnov was under U.S. sanctions imposed in December 2021 under the "Magnitskyi Act." The U.S. Department of the Treasury accused him of corruption and attempts to influence the Ukrainian judicial system.
The murder took place around 9:15 a.m., when, according to a spokesperson for the National Police Headquarters, an emergency call was made to 091 reporting a man with gunshot wounds on the street.
At that time, students — from preschoolers to high schoolers — had already arrived at school. Forensic police and a specialized homicide investigation unit (Group V) were dispatched to the scene and took over the case.
According to emergency service 112, the victim was a 52-year-old man who was shot dead at the entrance of Colegio Americano. A representative of the 112 service told the newspaper that between 9:10 and 9:15, a citizen called to report "a wounded man lying on the ground unconscious." Upon arrival, Summa 112 personnel confirmed the man’s death, citing "wounds incompatible with life, after suffering at least three gunshot injuries."
"One shot, which was fatal, was fired into the head, at neck level, from behind and at an angle. The other two hit the abdomen and side," the same source reported.
Initially, emergency responders were uncertain about the victim’s nationality, but his watch provided a key clue — it had Ukrainian lettering.
Police sources told El País that the man was a Ukrainian citizen driving a Mercedes when he was ambushed by two or three attackers, who shot him five times in the head and back. Police have not disclosed the type of weapon used, as the investigation is still in its early stages.
