One killed by bomb near California fertility clinic; FBI labels it ’terrorism’
The FBI is on the scene of a fatal explosion in the affluent community of Palm Springs, California - local cops are treating the incident as an ’act of terrorism’
The famed celebrity haunt of Palm Springs, California, was rocked by a deadly explosion yesterday. The blast, which occurred at around 11am local time, has left at least one person dead with reports of body parts in the road.
Officials have said they believe it was an "intentional act of violence" and have branded it "one of the largest bombing investigations" in Southern California.
In a press conference Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said: "I am really saddened by today’s attack on our city, but I am also hopeful because this city will rise and this city is resilient and will be strong.” He confirmed it was an “isolated incident” and said: “I am confident that the community is not at risk any longer."
He concluded: “Terrorism came knocking on the door of Palm Springs, we survived. I can tell you that this city will rise and it will be more effective as a beacon of hope than before.”
The FBI’s Assistant Director in Charge, Akil Davis said: "Let me be clear, this was probably one of the largest bombing investigations that we’ve had in Southern California its on scale of the Aliso Viejo bombing in Orange County."
FBI investigators are present along with investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed.
Concerned locals have said they felt the area "shake" when some kind of loud bang was heard. One resident said they were jogging a short distance away from the American Reproductive Centres when the blast occured.
"It was so loud it shook me," Tamara Cash told The Desert Sun. "All I could hear was alarms going off in different buildings."
Authorities have not released the identity of the person thought to be responsible but they believe the individual died in a car explosion. Four others were injured but details of the severity of their injuries weren’t shared.
