Millions of Brits could find their mobile phones cut off from the internet very soon.
O2 is gearing up to switch off its 3G service later this year, leaving older handsets without web access.
The change will also affect other operators that use the same network, including Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff and Sky Mobile.
Three, Vodafone and EE have already made the move.
Announcing the change, O2 said: ‘3G has been superseded by 4G and 5G networks over recent years, with the 3G network carrying less and less traffic.
‘By focusing our investment on 4G and 5G, we’ll be able to further expand and upgrade services.
‘And it means you’ll be able to benefit from quicker download speeds and higher quality voice calls.’
The network provider adds on its website that ‘nothing will change for you right now’ and customers will be contacted with more information closer to the time.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, explained the switch-off is a ‘crucial step to free up capacity for expanding 4G and 5G networks’.
‘While the majority of customers do have a 4G or 5G compatible phone, there will still be a proportion of customers with older devices who will need to upgrade this year,’ he said.
‘If you do need to upgrade, there are plenty of affordable options out there, and it may be worth looking into a refurbished device if you’re not looking for the latest launches and don’t want a costly upgrade.’
