Four people have been taken to hospital after being exposed to excess chlorine at a swimming pool and spa in Derbyshire.

Emergency services were called to Clifford’s Gym and Spa in Regent Street, Long Eaton, at 10:10 GMT on Tuesday.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said 27 people had been exposed and 10 were showing symptoms relating to exposure.

None of the symptoms are serious, the fire service added.

’No wider risk’

Fire service group manager David Diggins said crews were called to reports of people who had been "overcome by the chemical" and were feeling nauseous.

He told the BBC there had been "a mixture of some chemicals within the systems" of the pool, which had been overfilled.

"There is no wider risk of chemicals in the area and the incident has now been fully resolved," he added.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said it sent "a number of resources" after receiving a call reporting a medical emergency.

EMAS said it took four patients to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed, and the manager on duty told the BBC the gym remained open.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the venue said the pool and spa would reopen at 14:00.

"Following an incident this morning during normal pool maintenance, the relevant authorities have now given us the OK to safely open the pool and spa," it said.
