M6 crash: Five killed, including two children, as a third fights for life following a horrific collision
Five people, including two children, have been killed in a crash on the M6 near Tebay Services in Cumbria after two cars collided, with a third child fighting for their life
Two men, a woman and two children have been killed in a horror crash on the M6, with a third child left fighting for their life in hospital.
The crash took place on the M6 Northbound, just past Tebay Services in Cumbria, with police called to the scene at 4.04pm yesterday afternoon. Two vehicles were involved in the crash - a Skoda and a Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota, a man, a woman and two children from Glasgow all died at the scene of the crash. A third child, who was travelling in the Toyota, is fighting for their life after they were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.
National Highways confirmed at the time of the crash that two air ambulances landed at the scene. A man from Cambridgeshire, the driver of the Skoda, also died at the scene. Families of those involved in the horrific crash are being supported by specially trained officers, according to police.
The M6 was closed from Junction 36 to Junction 39 as a result of the crash, as drivers were warned by police the road could be "closed for some time". Police confirmed in an appeal that the road remained closed following the crash until the "early hours of this morning", around 12 hours after the crash.
An eyewitness described the huge emergency presence at the scene, saying there was "lots of black smoke". Writing on social media, they said: "Something serious happening on M6 northbound, just passed Tebay services. Loads of blue lights going up the hard shoulder, can see lots of black smoke and looks like the air ambulance has just come in as well. I really do hope everyone’s ok."
