Matheus Nunes ’arrest’: The truth behind the rumors after the Man City star was involved in a nightclub incident
Matheus Nunes was involved in an incident at a Madrid nightclub during the September international break but reports the Manchester City star was arrested have been exaggerated
Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes WAS NOT arrested by Spanish authorities - after reports claimed he was involved in an altercation at a Spanish nightclub.
Nunes joined City in a £53million deal from Wolves in the summer of 2023. But he has struggled for opportunities since then, featuring for just 20 minutes in the Premier League so far this season.
His lack of game-time has seen him drop out of the Portugal national squad and he instead spent part of the September international break on holiday. But there were claims that he ran into trouble with police during his time away.
It was reported by El Mundo that Nunes was arrested by Spanish police at a Madrid nightclub after allegedly stealing a phone from a 58-year-old man. Mirror Football has confirmed that those reports are inaccurate.
Police were called to the nightclub after a confrontation between Nunes and the 58-year-old man. Nunes is said to have only pushed the phone out of the man’s hand after asking him to stop taking pictures, rather than stealing it.
While it had been claimed Nunes was handcuffed and taken to a police station, it is understood the incident has been exaggerated, with Nunes not being arrested and police taking no further action when responding to the call.
As first reported by the Manchester Evening News, it is not expected that the midfielder will face any further action in relation to the incident. Mirror Football has approached Manchester City for comment on the reports of Nunes’ arrest.
Nunes played all 90 minutes as City smashed Slovan Bratislava in their second Champions League game of the season on Tuesday night. The Portugal international started alongside Ilkay Gundogan in central midfield. The City star is now targeting increased game-time, with star midfielder Rodri having been ruled out for the rest of the season. And Nunes is confident he can help to fill the gap the Spaniard has left.
“We’re going to have to fill the void because it’s a massive loss but whoever is on the pitch is going to perform well,” Nunes said last week. “At Wolves I played more as a winger and last year here I played more as a No 10.
"But when I played for Sporting I always played in the double pivot so I’m used to every position now. I try to help the team every time the coach puts me on the field but I know the other guys are all ready as well because we have so much quality in the team.
“We have shown that if any player is out we have another one that is ready and has top quality to play. Last year it happened with Erling [Haaland] and Kevin [De Bruyne] and we still managed to win. This year, I know we will be the same.”
