'I won't buy plane seat next to my partner - she's mad but it'd cost £230 more'

When it comes to booking seats on a plane, we all have our preferences - whether you like to look at the views from a window seat, prefer being next to the aisle, or for some reason just love sitting in the middle seat.

But regardless of what seats we prefer sitting in, most of us just want a plane ticket that isn't too expensive and will get us to our destination in one piece without breaking the bank.

So when one man discovered he could get a plane ticket for his upcoming holiday for just £70 he was over the moon - until he told his girlfriend, who was livid with him for not booking the seat next to hers.

The man explained his mum works for an airline and helped get his girlfriend and her family discounted seats, with each of them paying £300 for their tickets.

As he is a direct relative of the employee, he will be able to get a staff ticket for £70 but will only be able to bag the cheap ticket if there are any seats left two weeks before the departure date.

This also means he'll have to take any seat that's available and won't be able to choose where he sits - which his girlfriend isn't happy with, as she wants him to be sat next to her.

In a post on Reddit, the man said: "I am going away with my girlfriend's family this summer. My mum works for an airline so has helped them all get tickets at a cheaper rate. Despite this, I can get a staff ticket from my mum personally, which comes out to about £70 as opposed to the £300 that they are all paying.

"For the past week or so my girlfriend has been demanding I buy my plane ticket for the holiday. I have explained to her multiple times that I would rather pay £70 and take the hit of a random seat than pay £300 just to sit next to her on a 2-hour flight. This seemingly has really p***ed her off, [and she's] claiming she just wants the guarantee that I will get on and sit next to her, rather than for me to wait two weeks before the flight to pick up a staff ticket at the 1/4 of a price."

The man admitted there is a "slim chance" the flight will be fully-booked and he won't be able to get on, but he insisted that shouldn't be an issue as there are three flights a day to their destination, so he can always hop on a different one.

But his girlfriend still isn't happy and has been telling him not to bother coming at all.

He added: "There is a slim chance I won't get on but they are running three flights a day to our destination, and I mean SLIM chance I won't get on.

"She's now being rude and blunt, saying 'just don’t come then, you're obviously not bothered' when I am just trying to save a bit of money. Am I the a**hole for 'leaving it last minute' and not having a 'normal holiday' (her quotes)?"

Commenters on the post were largely on the man's side, with many insisting it isn't a bad idea to want to save money, and others suggesting he use some of the cash he's saved with his discounted ticket to take his girlfriend to a nice dinner when they arrive at their destination.

One person said: "I may be weird, but if my boyfriend did this to save money, I don't think I would care. It's only a two-hour flight. Maybe you can take her to a nice dinner with some of the money saved."

While another added: "If it's that important to her, she can pay the £230 difference."

And a third posted: "I would take that deal, too. And be happy if my boyfriend did. That is a lot of money to save especially if money is tight. If there's little risk and other options if the first flight falls through, two hours of not sitting next to each other is well worth that amount saved."

Others said they could see where his girlfriend was coming from too, and even the man replied to one comment saying he could see his partner's point of view as "paying the extra money saves stress".
