Tributes have been paid after news broke about the death of a 40-year-old man who collapsed during Sunday’s Great Manchester Run, which took place on the city’s streets
A 40-year-old man has died after collapsing at the Great Manchester Run.
The man is said to have received medical treatment after falling ill during the event, which took place on Sunday, before dying in hospital. Organisers for the Great Run Company sent a message offering condolences to the family and friends of the individual, who has not been named at the time of writing.
An estimated 25,000 people took part in the event, which saw participants run through the streets of Manchester. According to the BBC, the individual fell ill in the half-marathon event, while there was also a 10k run taking place.
Tributes have begun to pour in following the news. "RIP to the man thinking of [his] family, one social media user wrote after learning of the death.
The Great Manchester Run was broadcast live on BBC One on Sunday. The 10k run took place for the first time in 2003, while the half-marathon distance was added to proceedings in 2017.
The race took a familiar route, beginning on Portland Street and finishing on Deansgate. Runners made their way past Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium during the route.
