The Grand National took place on Saturday afternoon at Aintree Racecourse, with I Am Maximus going off as joint favourite and romping to victory, ensuring a fat payday for owner JP McManus
I Am Maximus claimed victory in the 2024 Grand National - the biggest, most famous and best race of the British horseracing calendar.
And victory for the Willie Mullins-trained joint-favourite, ridden by Paul Townend, ensured a bumper pay day for owner JP McManus after powering to victory in the notoriously difficult to predict jump race - making the final yards of the four mile, two furling and 74 yard epic look easy!
Townend said: “It’s an unbelievable race and an unbelievable horse and it’s a bit surreal to be honest! Gold Cups are Gold Cups and Grade Ones are hard to win. But Grand Nationals are just a bit different. You just need so much luck and I can’t believe it, I’m a lucky boy.”
And with over £1million on offer in prize money alone, I Am Maximus takes the top prize, this year standing at a healthy £561,000.
Even if they don’t cross the line first, nearly one third of the competitors take home some prize money, with the top 10 each receiving a pay out.
Second place this year went to Delta Work trained by Gordon Elliott, ensuring a handsome payout of £211,100. In third, Minella Indo, ridden by Rachael Blackmore, lands £105,500 for connections. Another Elliott horse, Galvin, finished fourth, landing £52,700.
The owners will pocket the majority of that fee, but, depending on their deal, jockeys will receive around eight per cent of the advertised prize money and around two or three per cent of the place prize money.
