Manchester City and Arsenal finally know who they could possibly face in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The competition's last 16 rounded off last night in dramatic fashion as Atletico Madrid overcame a first leg deficit to secure their place in the next round. Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay scored the goals to force the match beyond 90 minutes after Federico Dimarco had extended Inter's lead with Diego Simeone's side winning on penalties.

After a wait of almost eight years for a shootout, Europe's premier tournament saw two in two days. Arsenal also required spotkicks to navigate their way past Porto and into the business end of proceedings.

Things were more comfortable for Borussia Dortmund who earned their place among the remaining eight teams with a 2-0 win over PSV on Wednesday evening. Goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus were enough after the Bundesliga side had earned a draw in Eindhoven in the round's first leg.

Atletico and Dortmund joined Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Barcelona as possible opponents for Arsenal and Man City. The Premier League duo could also face each other with this stage of the competition being subject to an open draw.

That means that sides can face teams from their own nation or who they played in the group stages and there is no seeding. Premier League sides last faced each other in the 2021 final when Chelsea prevailed over Man City. The last quarter final meeting between English teams was Tottenham vs Manchester City on the Lilywhites' route to the final in 2019.

Teams will discover who next stands in their way en route to the final on Friday. The draw will take place in Nyon from 11am GMT.

March 15 will also see the remaining sides learn who they could take on in the semi-final of the competition. Balls that contain slips of paper marked 'winners of quarter-final 1' through to 'winners of quarter-final 4' will be placed in a pot and drawn.

In each draw, the team pulled out first will become the designated home team for the first leg of the round. That will also be true of a draw that takes place for the final as a home team is nominated for administrative purposes.
