A bomb squad swooped on a residential street in Manchester as police enforced a 330ft evacuation zone.

Emergency services, including officers from Greater Manchester Police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) were in attendance on Ellesmere Street in Failsworth. A number of houses were evacuated amid the ongoing response with a cordon in place. Police asked people to avoid the street and surrounding area while a property was inspected at the scene.

In addition to the cordon, a 100 metre (328ft) evacuation zone was enforced around the property until shortly after 5pm when police confirmed that residents could return to their homes. A bomb disposal robot was used to find the device. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Emergency services are currently responding to an ongoing incident on Ellesmere Street in Failsworth. A cordon is in place while enquiries are ongoing.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed it had crews on the scene, assisting police in the operation. "At just after 2.20pm this afternoon (Wednesday March 13) three fire engines from Hollins, Chadderton and Philips Park fire stations were called to reports of an incident on Ellesmere Street, Failsworth. Crews remain in attendance in support of colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service and Explosive Ordinance Disposal," officials told Manchester Evening News.
