Jamie Carragher has described the notion of Manchester City bringing more revenue than any other football club as "ridiculous".

The former Liverpool defender and football pundit was incredulous at the idea that the Premier League champions had generated more income than either Manchester United or Real Madrid in recent times despite their success. Carragher posited Los Blancos' 14 Champions League trophies as an argument to combat the suggested impact of City's European glory.

Manchester City posted a record £712.8million income for the 2022/23 season where the club earned their first treble with Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup success. That saw them surpass the division's previous record, £648.4m, which Manchester United posted for the season.

City's income increased from £613m as the club saw their profit almost double with an increase from £41.7m to £80.4m. That is despite a large increase in wages as an outlay.

Carragher was unable to comprehend that City could compete in terms of revenue with clubs the size of United or Real Madrid. He provided his view on The Overlap Fan Debate, via Sky Bet.

The 46-year-old said: “When you see Manchester City say they’re bringing in more commercial revenue than anyone in the world, that is ridiculous – that can’t be right. I’m not having a go at the club, but other fans will be like ‘Come on’. Real Madrid won 14 European Cups – you can’t bring in more revenue than them!”

City are still set to face 115 charges from the Premier League after allegedly breaching rules following an investigation that was opened in 2018. Those charges include allegations over the club's financial reporting and poor cooperation with the Premier League's investigation. The club deny any wrongdoing.

City face 54 allegations of failing to provide accurate and up-to-date financial information from 2009/10 in addition to 14 alleged breaches of failing to provide accurate financial reports of player and manager compensation over the same period. It is also set to be established whether City have complied with rules regarding financial fair play following an investigation that concluded after more than four years.

Premier League chief Richard Masters confirmed in January that a date is in place for City's hearing. Charges were announced in February 2023.
