Liverpool have confirmed the return of Michael Edwards in what is a massive boost for the club.

The Reds are due to enter a new era as they prepare for a season without Jurgen Klopp for the first time in nine years. Edwards was among those in the background who helped make Klopp's Liverpool one of Europe's finest outfits with his knowledge of the transfer market a huge strength.

He's been absent from Anfield for several years though but has been convinced to return in a new role. He will help seek and appoint Klopp's successor but before that, the German will be hoping to leave Merseyside as a Premier League winner for a second time. Here's the latest from Liverpool.

Edwards returns to new role

Edwards admits he can't wait to get started in his new role as the CEO of football after reaching a deal with the Fenway Sports Group. He will now help lead the search for Liverpool's new manager.

FSG confirmed the appointment in a statement on Tuesday, with Edwards returning to the club two years after he left as sporting director, but in a more senior role within FSG.

Edwards said: "I am very grateful to Mike [Gordon], John [Henry], Tom [Werner] and the ownership group for offering me the opportunity to take on this new leadership role within FSG," Edwards said. "I was humbled by the desire and persistence they showed in wanting to work with me again. This is definitely not something I can take for granted given their track record across sport and business."

TAA told to "shut his mouth"

Emmanuel Petit has told Trent Alexander-Arnold to "shut his mouth" after the right-back suggested winning the title means more to the Reds than rivals Manchester City due to the financial differences between the two clubs.

The Reds star claimed before the weekend's draw at Anfield: "How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans."

Petit though has hit back and told OCB Scores: "What Trent Alexander-Arnold said about trophies being more important to Liverpool players and fans is bull****. That's bull****. Is he trying to say that Liverpool fans are better and more passionate than other fans?

‌"Does he think they deserve to win more trophies than other clubs for their fans? That's ridiculous. When I read that comment I thought to myself: 'Sometimes it's better to shut your mouth'."

Benitez sacked at Celta

Celta Vigo have sacked former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez after a disappointing period in charge. He only took over the La Liga side back in June, returning to management almost 18 months after leaving Everton.

However, Benitez endured a difficult time following his appointment and was relieved of his duties on Tuesday afternoon after winning just one of his last five matches. Throughout his tenure at Celta, Benitez won nine of his 33 games and leaves the club in a precarious position as they still face the threat of relegation.

Celta sit 17th on five victories and nine draws from their 28 games, two points above 18th-place Cadiz inside the bottom three. Benitez recently claimed he would eventually like to go into international management as he begins the search for his next role.
