Makeup can be a great tool to hide dark circles, wrinkles and spots - but it can also age us if not done correctly according to one makeup artist.

The last thing we want when applying makeup is to actually make ourselves look older than we are. As everyone's goal is to achieve a flawless look and making us appear younger, popular makeup artist Wayne Goss has urged people to avoid three common make-up mistakes that could actually be adding years to your face rather than looking more youthful.

Wayne, who also runs his own sell-out cosmetics site and YouTube channel said the majority of us applying makeup to improve how we look or cover up wrinkles could be having the complete opposite effect.

Being a makeup artist for over 15 years, Wayne knows his stuff. The first product the pro urged people to avoid was metallic eyeshadow and said: "Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases." He also pointed out that powder is easier to apply over cream eyeshadows as it blends out better and stated to never blend it out with a finger either.

Next up is concealer, and Wayne explained how a concealer that is too light around the eyes can "add years to your face" and stressed the importance of finding one that is best suited to your skin tone. He added: "Cream concealer is always recommended above liquids, and I'd highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that’s the one part of the eye that doesn't crease."

Finally, the makeup whizz recommended the use of hydrating products and always reaching for a good primer. As we get older, our skin becomes drier, and Wayne suggested incorporating hydrating ingredients into your skincare and makeup, he said: "Look for make-up with ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid when you're on your next make-up and skincare shopping haul to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated."

So when it comes to the application, he instructed: "Before you start applying anything to your face, ensure that you've applied a heavy moisturiser to ensure your skin stays hydrated. Use a good primer before you start applying your make-up to ensure it'll act as a barrier between your skin and your make-up to help the make-up stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines."
