Chart-topper Gabrielle has revealed a "mistake" that she makes on stage at the moment due to the menopause.
The singer-songwriter, 54, rose to fame more than two decades ago with singles like Dreams and Out of Reach. She's continued to release music and perform since then, including having competed on the Masked Singer in 2021.
Gabrielle - whose debut album, Find Your Way, celebrated its 30th anniversary just months ago - recently opened up about performing in her fifties. She spoke about the "difference" between her performances now. She told the Daily Star : "I still can't believe I'm lucky enough to be doing what I love for over 30 years. It's been 31 years since Dreams [came out] and I'm still living out my dream of making new music and performing my songs on stage."
The Brit Award winner went on to discuss the impact of the menopause on her performances. She teased the outlet that she now occasionally sings into a fan, mistaking the cooling device for her microphone whilst on stage. Gabrielle said: "The only difference now is I keep singing into my fan by mistake because I get so hot on stage due to the menopause. I'll be performing and I forget I am holding a fan to keep me cool and I start singing into it thinking it's the microphone."
She added: "I've made peace that that is what menopause can do to you. I didn't realise it was such a taboo subject until I started talking about it during my shows. I'm a chatterbox. Gabby by name, gobby by nature. It's a fact of life and nothing to be ashamed of." Gabrielle's debut single Dreams was released back in 1993. The performer went on release various other songs like Rise, Sunshine and Out of Reach. The latter appeared on the soundtrack of the film Bridget Jones's Diary (2001).
Three new celebrities are set to join The Masked Singer panel this weekendThe acclaimed singer is said to have semi-retired about 15 years ago to focus on raising her two children. She's since returned to music though and is preparing to release a new album, A Place in Your Heart, later this year in May. The artist - who's announced a new tour - said: "This does feel like a second chance at my career. Performing at the O2 and in arenas again after all this time is a professional dream coming true. You could call it a renaissance."
She added: "I did 32 shows last year and this year looks to be even busier. My priority 15 years ago was very much my children and being a good parent. But now it is about pleasing myself and having fun. I no longer have to rush back for the school run or worry about embarrassing my kids at school. I am allowed to be myself now with less worries. I feel like I can enjoy the magic of what being on stage does to me again, emotionally and spiritually."
Gabrielle also told the outlet: "I would love to have a career like Sir Elton John and continue performing into my seventies. That's how I look at my career now. While people still want to come see me on stage I still want to be on stage singing." I am in my fifties now and happier than ever. I feel like if I don't learn to love and accept myself now I never will. I am now a mum, a grandma and I am doing exactly what I love to do. I am blessed," she further commented recently.
