A jockey has been banned for six months after he was caught betting on horse races.

Dale Evans, who has ridden nearly 1,000 winners during a 14-year career, faced an inquiry in Queensland, Australia after details of his betting activity were provided to stewards by two leading betting operators.

He was charged with misconduct under rules which stipulate a jockey must not bet on any thoroughbred race anywhere in the world.

The hearing heard that Evans placed 2,042 bets on races around the world with bookmakers Neds and Ladbrokes between July and December 2023, of which 47 were on Australian races.

Evans, who has ridden four winners during the 2023-24 season, pleaded guilty and made a full admission.

He was suspended from riding in races for six months by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission.

The sentence will begin in April when Evans has completed a four-month ban for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure his mount obtained the best possible place in a race in December.

Evans has the right of appeal.
