A British holidaymaker has been found dead at their hotel in a tourist hotspot in the northern part of Mexico.

The 75-year-old woman's body was discovered by her Irish husband, who is believed to have found her unconscious at the unnamed hotel in Creel, in the state of Chihuahua. Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to do anything to save her life.

Local press says the woman's husband is believed to be 79 years old and a translator was sent to the scene to help authorities with their investigation. No information has yet been released about a possible cause of death but a post-mortem will take place.

Creel is a small mountain town surrounded by a patchwork of rugged canyons and is regarded as the gateway to Mexico’s Copper Canyon which is described as one of the wildest and most beautiful regions in the country. It was traditionally a logging town but tourism is now the primary job source.

It is a 3.5 hour drive away from the state capital Chihuahua. One of the regional attractions is El Chepe train, regarded as the best way to cross the Copper Canyon and one of the world’s most exciting rail trips.

Elsewhere, a 59-year-old man believed to be a British tourist has died on a flight from the Falkland Islands to Chile. The holidaymaker and his wife were on a plane heading to the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas, operated by Chilean airline LATAM. He tragically died before the aircraft landed.

The victim and his partner were due to take a second flight to the country's capital, Santiago de Chile. Chilean police from a homicide unit met the plane when it arrived at Carlos Ibanez del Campo Airport. Diego Díaz, Deputy Commissioner of the specialist unit based in Punta Arenas, confirmed the man's death.

A post-mortem due to take earlier this week but it is expected to confirm he died of natural causes. The whereabouts of the unnamed man's wife today were not immediately clear. The Mirror has contacted LATAM for comment.

In December, we reported that a British woman who was taken ill while travelling from Tenerife to Glasgow died. Pilots sent an emergency signal shortly after the TUI plane full of passengers took off from the Canary Islands. It was diverted to Madeira and landed around 20 minutes later.
