Wrestler Virgil, who spent time in WWE during his long career, has died at the age of 61.

The news was broken by Mark Charles II, while details of Virgil's health battles have also been shared. Virgil, real name Michael Jones, was active in WWF and WWE - among other promotions - during a long career.

"My dear friends, it is with great sorrow that I bring news from the Jones family of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, whom we know and loved as Virgil, Vincent, Soul Train Jones and more," the statement read. "Virgil passed peacefully at the hospital this morning and I ask that you pray for him and for his family. May his memory be eternal!"

According to Wrestling News, Jones had been diagnosed with dementia in 2022. Prior to that, the wrestler - who began his career back in the 80s - had reportedly suffered two strokes.

Back in 2022, Virgil received the support of the wrestling community after being diagnosed with colon cancer. It was reported that Chris Jericho was among the wrestling stars to chip in, donating $1,500 to the cause.

A number of wrestling fans have shared messages and memories following Virgil's death. "R.I.P Virgil he'll be missed," wrote one, while another simply said "Sad news".

Others shared videos and photos of memorable moments from Virgil's career. These included a 1992 title bout with Bret Hart, where Hart managed to retain his world heavyweight title.

Virgil shot to fame in WWE precursor the World Wrestling Federation, where he spent the best part of the decade on the roster. His appearances included an involvement in multiple Royal Rumbles, while he also appeared at Wrestlemania VIII.

"RIP Virgil," read another of the many tributes paid to the star on social media. "For a four-year-old who hated the bad guys seeing you beat [Ted] DiBiase was pretty cool."

Former WWE star Matt Hardy was another of those to pay tribute. "RIP Virgil, Mike Jones," he wrote. "Virgil was a funny, unique individual that was always cool to me & I’m saddened to hear about his passing. My thoughts go out to his family, friends & fans."
