Eleven beloved dog breeds are at risk of "disappearing from our parks and streets" - and are on the UK Kennel Club's "watch list."
Vulnerable dogs, according to the organisation are "dog breeds of British and Irish origin that are considered to be vulnerable due to their declining registration numbers." In most cases, the reasons behind certain dog breeds at risk of disappearing include not being considered fashionable enough to adopt by prospective dog owners, or simply because people don't know they exist.
The top ten breeds in the UK (including the Labrador, French Bulldog and Cocker Spaniel) account for more than 60% of annual puppy registrations for all breeds. There are over 200 breeds of dogs, and the UK Kennel Club are encouraging the public to consider getting a dog from a "lesser known breed."
Ruth Ashcroft and her Glen of Imaal terrier called Erin (Birmingham Mail)The organisation has listed eleven dog breeds on the "at watch" list - these are dogs with between 300 and 450 registrations a year, so they can monitor them. The dogs on the list include:
- Bedlington Terrier
- Bullmastiff
- Cairn Terrier
- Collie (Rough)
- Fox Terrier (Wire)
- Norfolk Terrier
- Old English Sheepdog
- Parson Russell Terrier
- Pointer
- Scottish Terrier
- Welsh Terrier

If you're thinking of getting a dog from one of these breeds, the UK Kennel Club advises people to ensure they are a "responsible breeder." The organisation said on their website: "If you're thinking about getting a vulnerable breed, or any other breed, it's crucial that you go to a responsible breeder. Find out more about The Kennel Club Assured Breeders.
"Breed clubs exist for every single breed and they offer a wealth of information for anyone considering getting a dog. Anyone wanting a specific breed should speak to the relevant breed club for information and guidance. Find your local breed club.
"People can also consider rescuing a dog. The Kennel Club Breed Rescue is made up of a number of breed-specific rescue services that may be able to offer the right dog to the right home."
