A one-legged robber was caught on CCTV attempting to steal money from a post office with a spoon.

Drug addict Jelanie Scott was found attempting to grab cash from behind a security screen through the counter window at Hyson Green Post Office, in Nottingham. The 36-year-old had entered the shop on crutches at around 11.45am on February 10.

Staff spotted Scott's actions and activated the panic alarm triggering the security smoke system. As smoke filled the post office, the hapless crook hopped away from the scene and left in a taxi but dropped his debit card bearing his name.

Nottinghamshire Police recognised him from CCTV footage and he was arrested nine days later when officers spotted. Scott admitted the offence and told officers he was suffering with his mental health and had taken cocaine and heroin that day.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court last week charged with attempted burglary where he pleaded guilty. Sergeant Mark Southgate, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, said: "There was overwhelming evidence in this case and I am pleased Scott has been held to account for his actions. He told officers it was a stupid thing to do and I hope he now reflects on his behaviour and stays out of trouble."
