If you happen to own one of the latest iPhones from Apple then you’ll have full access to a feature called Emergency SOS via satellite. This basically allows you to send urgent texts into space and has been introduced to help with those times when you’re off the beaten track, need help and have no access to a standard mobile signal.
Satellite texting is available on devices including the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 but it’s not something you’ll currently find on any popular Android devices including those made by Samsung.
Luckily, that could be about to change with US firm technology giant Qualcomm announcing that its latest in-phone 5G modem will feature integrated NB-NTN satellite communications support.
Although Qualcomm is yet to reveal specifics or what devices will get its new system it could finally mean call makers such as the next Galaxy can match Apple and send texts into space.
Samsung already uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips in some of their phones so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this manufacturer add the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System in the future.

Along with satellite texting, the X80 also offers improved 5G connectivity whilst using less power. That should help extend battery life and make downloading movies on the move a little less hassle.

Watch this space for more details about this upgrade. All Qualcomm has revealed for now is that commercial devices powered by Snapdragon X80 are expected to launch in the second half of 2024.
