Jamie Redknapp miffed with referee decision that "upset" Jurgen Klopp

Jamie Redknapp echoed Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah's disappointment after seeing Moises Caicedo escape a red card against Liverpool.

The Chelsea midfielder produced a crunching challenge on midfield opponent Ryan Gravenberch during Sunday's Carabao Cup final. It left the Dutchman needing medical treatment, while he then had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Jurgen Klopp and star forward Mo Salah - injured for the game - were left visibly fuming by the challenge. Redknapp gave his verdict and thought their reactions were justified.

"It's not a great challenge, it's extremely clumsy," he said during Sky Sports' half-time analysis. "I think it always is worse when a player's foot is planted. You can see here, as Gravenberch makes the challenge, his foot is planted. It looks disgusting.

"You can see here, Caicedo is not looking where the ball is going. You can see why he [Gravenberch] comes off. It's definitely a yellow card. I can see why Jurgen Klopp was so upset and disappointed with it."

There was actually no consequence for Caicedo, who just received a stern word from the referee. Former Premier League referee Mike Dean did not think he should have been sent off.

Asked for his opinion midgame, he claimed the challenge was “not serious foul play", so was not worthy of a red card. He added: "I think he's caught his foot on his (Ryan Gravenberch's) foot.

"It's a bit like yesterday (Harry Maguire on Sasa Lukic), but not as severe, Chris (Kavanagh) has tried to play on, the second one it's not a foul. For me, it could've been a caution, or come back to book him, it's the second foul from Caicedo so he's treading a fine line.

"I know the VAR can't inform the referee but tackles like that, he's seen a foul, tried to play on that's when you say to the referee: 'it's not serious foul play but it's a yellow card'. It is a yellow card offence, no doubt whatsoever."

Elsewhere, Gravenberch's afternoon was cut cruelly short as he was replaced by defender Joe Gomez. He now looks set to join Liverpool's long list of injured players on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. The afternoon then grew even worse for Klopp's side after seeing Virgil van Dijk's opening goal ruled out for a controversial offside in the build-up.

It was the second marginal offside decision of the game after former Liverpool star Raheem Sterling had his own goal chalked off. Provider of the strike, Nicolas Jackson, was ruled offside in the build-up.
