Dunelm toaster and kettle that I mistook on the shelf for Smeg

For many homeowners kitting out kitchens with essential food-prep devices isn't just about functionality but style as looks and design are huge tick-boxes for interior lovers. And Smeg is one designer brand that's heaving sought after.

When it comes to worktop gadgets Smeg kettles and toasters fly off the shelves thanks to their known retro look and range of pastel colours, I mean if you wanted a pastel pink or duck-egg blue fridge to brighten up your kitchen this is the brand to go for. I too am a huge fan of the 50's style brand but at more than £100 for its Cream Jug Kettle, and £130 for its two slicer toaster, I'm one of many shoppers who find its designer look out of budget.

This is where one retailer may come in as a surprise, as it stocks a very similar version of the vintage Smeg model, but for a fraction of the price. Fans of the brand can save the pennies but achieve the same look with Dunelm's Retro Cream Kettle and Toaster, which cost just £45 each, not £130.

With its cream textured design and retro dials, these two devices can easily be mistaken for the designer Smeg brand, which is exactly what I did on a recent in-store trip to Dunelm. From afar this more affordable set achieves the same kitsch look, even when up close.

The only difference I'd say is the missing distinct SMEG writing on the front, something which has become a popular kitchen must-have in its own right. And even being a cheaper alternative Dunelm's version has more to offer than Smeg, in my opinion.

This is apparent on the Retro Cream Toaster, at £45 this has four slice compartments compared to the £130 Smeg, which is fitted with just two. Anyone who opted for the four-slice Smeg model would spend £179. The Dunelm Retro Kettle has a very distinct temperature dial and upward curved handle, playing on the 50's style stove-top kettles although this is of course electric.

If Dunelm's cheaper retro devices haven't swayed you, then Currys has a full range of stock on the popular Smeg kettle, toaster, stand mixers, and coffee machine.
