Beyonce announced her new hair care line, Cécred, and shared a glimpse into her upbringing alongside it.

The Texas native explained that her mother ran a hair salon growing up and she learned more about the emotional meaning and weight that a person's hair can have. From Beyonce's perspective, moments in the hair salon for women were acts of "therapy" and, as a young girl, she discovered that it was a "sacred space for these women."

She told Essence: "Allowing yourself to be taken care of, especially for Black women, who are always taking care of everyone else—it’s all sacred. So I took the end of my name, Cé, and made it the beginning of the word sacred to create Cécred. From my mother’s salon, daily rituals with my father, and years of experience in developing a hair care line, the journey has been just that: Cécred."

The music legend explained that the space wasn't just therapeutic for the clients, but also for herself. In fact, it helped her realize her calling, leading to the music smash hits we have today. Beyonce explained: "[My mother] found a therapist for me, during a period when I was extremely introverted and hardly spoke. It was in her salon that I realized my dreams of being a performer—inspired by one of her clients who happened to be an opera singer."

She also explained the significance hair plays in her life today. In 2013, she hacked off much of her hair into a stylish pixie cut which inspired fans across the world to do the same. The act was symbolic for Beyonce who explained that it was an "emotional transformation" around the time she was entering motherhood. In fact, she even saw it as a an act of rebellion against the expectations of womanhood as a whole.

It wasn't a plotted or calculated choice, but rather one that Beyonce did at home with a pair of scissors. She later informed her hair stylist of the move who "was freaking out" at the major change. Nonetheless, the defining moment inspired bravery in the performer, allowing her to eventually move forward with this new brand.
