Pancake Day is nearly here - but how much will it cost to you make the sweet treat?

Shrove Tuesday marks the start of the build-up to Easter and falls on February 13 this year. It is now engrained into British society to make pancakes on this Tuesday - even if you are not religious - to use up all the foods traditionally given up for the Christian fast Lent which begins the day after.

Making pancakes is a fun and pretty simple activity to enjoy but as will all events and festivities it is tinged a tad due to the cost of living. Even though energy bills are not as high as they were last year, they still went up again in January so the cost of making pancakes is more than it was towards the end of last year.

According to the comparison and switching service uSwitch, households could collectively spend up to £1.8million in energy making 104 million pancakes this Shrove Tuesday. To help Brits this Pancake Day, uSwitch has compared how much it will cost to cook pancakes this year for both crepes and American style.

If you are a traditionalist and will be opting for your hob to cook your pancakes this year. Then thinner crepes are cheaper to make as they take less time to cook. Preparing five crepes with a gas hob would cost 1.9p this year, while households with an electric hob will see a cost of 6.8p. If you are doing five American-style pancakes, then it will cost you 2.5p or 8.8p respectively.

If you have a pancake maker, it will again be cheaper to cook five crepes rather than the thicker alternative as it will cost 4.6p compared to 5.8p. Some Brits may be thinking of turning to their air fryer to cook their pancakes this year. Unfortunately, Uswitch was unable to put together a figure for crepes. However, if you wanted to make five American-style pancakes in an air fryer it'll cost you 6.8p in energy.

If you are partaking in pancake day this year with some ready made shop shop-bought pancakes - don't worry we all have done this - then warming them up in the oven is the costliest method. For both pancake styles, uSwitch says it will cost you 10.6p to warm up in the oven whilst it will only cost 0.9p to use the microwave.

Natalie Mathie, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “We know Brits are worried about their energy usage, but hopefully it will put minds at ease to know that pancakes are a cheap treat to enjoy on Shrove Tuesday. If you want to keep an eye on your energy consumption, it’s worth using the free Uswitch app, Utrack, which connects to your smart meter. The app allows you to see the impact of your energy habits with hourly graphs, comparing gas and electricity use by day, week, month, and year.”
