Son Heung-min insists Tottenham have not spent a second thinking about a title challenge.

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne last week claimed Spurs are one of four teams capable of pipping the reigning champions – alongside Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

But Son says Ange Postecoglou’s team will not be drawn into any talk of a surprise charge, despite being the only side without Europe to contend with. Returning to the Champions League remains the primary aim and asked if players have been wondering about going all the way to the top, Son said: “Not at all.

“We are doing our best from our position and [what is] expected of us. There are so many contenders. There are so many favourites. Man City, Liverpool is flying now. From our position, we want to give our best and at the end of the season we are where we take it.”

Son, on the other hand, was almost apologetic towards Tottenham fans for causing so much stress in Saturday's last-gasp win against Brighton. Many will argue that added time goals are the most thrilling way to win a game but the captain would much rather results be settled earlier.

While no team has conceded more goals after the 90th minute than Spurs’ seven, Brennan Johnson’s heroics (after being set up by Son) made it eight points won in added time.

Having left it even later to turn defeat into a win against Sheffield United in September, Spurs also struck at the death to beat Liverpool and earn a draw at Man City.

“We never give up,” Son said. “We believe until the referees whistle. Obviously, you don’t want to finish in that way, it is not the best way to win games but we will take it. You have to believe until the end of the game. It’s a good win but we want to do better because we don’t want the fans panicking until the last second.”

And with Spurs now able to call on their full array of talent after Son returned from international duty and their injury woes have diminished, he added: "We have good players but the most important thing is that you take the responsibility like Richy did and Brennan does and Kulu does.

"I think everyone was doing a good job and especially Richy was doing a fantastic job when I was away. That is the sign that we have a quality player but we still have to work on it to make it easier to win the game to make more impacts."
