King Charles made a show of smiling and waving to well-wishers as he walked to church yesterday, a few days after his cancer diagnosis.
The monarch, who gave his “heartfelt thanks” for messages of support on Saturday, was joined by the Queen for the service at Sandringham.
Charles, 75, appeared in good spirits as he strolled at his usual brisk space to St Mary Magdalene Church on the Norfolk estate. Sources close to the King say he is “keen to be seen” as he undergoes treatment for unspecified cancer.
More than 100 fans gathered to watch him walk from Sandringham house to the 18th century church. Andy Frost, 48, of Cromer, Norfolk, said: “The King didn’t look too bad when you think of what he has been going through. He was walking very well.
“It was lovely to see him.” His wife Eileen added: “He looked quite well. He waved at everyone and seemed like he was doing really well.”

Charles is due to divide his time between Sandringham and Highgrove and travel privately to London every week for his cancer treatment. Not wanting to hide away, he will be driven in the state Bentley – with its large windows – when he is in the capital.

They said Charles is “wholly positive about his treatment”. Aides say his son and heir William, Prince of Wales will not deputise for him.
William only resumed duties last week after spending time with wife Kate, who had abdominal surgery last month.
They are spending half-term with their three children at Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate. A source told the Sunday Times William was “processing the news of his father having cancer”.
