Thiago Alcantara may have played his final game for Liverpool after suffering another injury as he played his first game in 10 months last weekend.

Thiago came off the bench in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday following a lengthy absence with hip and hamstring problems. However, the 32-year-old suffered another setback in his brief cameo against the Gunners.

It is understood Thiago has another muscle injury after feeling something during the game and Sky Sports are now reporting the midfielder may not play for Liverpool again. Thiago is out of contract at the end of the season and it appears unlikely he will be offered a new deal given his injury problems.

Before his appearance against Arsenal, the last game Thiago played came all the way back in April when Liverpool beat West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium. He is not the only Reds player who may have already played his final game for the club this season, with defender Joel Matip also out of contract this summer and currently sidelined with an injury.

Matip ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Fulham in December and could be out for the rest of the campaign. Reports have claimed that, like Thiago, Matip is not expected to be offered a new deal.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said he believes the defender should be given a new deal, but he will be stepping down as manager at the end of the season and it will be up to club chiefs and whoever replaces him to make a decision on Matip's future.

"I'm pretty sure the club will show their class, just as they should," Klopp said in December. "I'm pretty sure they have told Joel already whatever happens, as long as he's injured everything's fine, and now we have to make a decision with Joel how it looks after that.

"That's a normal thing to do but he deserves all the support from us, and he will get it. I would say so [that he deserves a new deal], but it's not my decision. I cannot sign the papers."

Matip has also said he wants to stay at Anfield beyond the end of the season, telling Sky Germany back in September: "Here in Liverpool, with these absolutely top conditions, you can't just leave.

"I also feel incredibly comfortable here in my private life. I think it's desirable not to constantly change clubs. But everyone has to decide that for themselves. In any case, I find consistency helpful."
