If you're dreaming of escaping the winter chill for some sunshine, there's is a tropical island chain which boasts 30C temperatures all year round and it's just a direct flight away from the UK.

As we shiver through the UK's cold weather and long nights this February, the people lucky enough to be on these gorgeous tropical islands are toasting themselves in a balmy 30C. For those seeking a dose of winter sun, Cape Verde is an ideal escape and what's more, it's a direct flight from the UK.

The island nation offers a fascinating blend of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian cultures, and enjoys a climate that hovers between 24C to 30C throughout the year - arguably the ideal Goldilocks temperature, the Express reports.

It's renowned for white-sand beaches which are perfect places to relaxed while as the impossible blue seeming water laps at the shore. Head inland and you will find a mountainous interior that caters to the adventurous traveller and provides many great hiking opportunities.

While direct flights to the island off the west coast of Africa takes around six hours from the UK, holidaymakers will appreciate the convenience of not having to deal with plane changes and lengthy layovers. At the moment there is a TUI round-trip from Manchester Airport on sale for £229 at the end of February running through to the beginning of March.

The flight gets you to Sal, Cape Verde’s most popular island. It is known for its striking, moon-like landscape that is dotted with colourful, cobbled towns, like Santa Maria on the southern shore. There you will find surf shops, traditional restaurants and a pretty square lined with al fresco cafés.

The main attraction, though, is the beach, which stretches along the coast for eight kilometres. Watersports are a big draw, but the sea can sometimes get a little choppy, so sunbathing's a popular fall-back.

The beautiful nation is made up of ten different islands that are separated by considerable stretches of sea. If you are willing to sail between them you can make it to Praia, the capital city, known for its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and cultural landmarks.

Other top spots in Cape Verde include the lively Sucupira Market and the impressive Presidential Palace. Don't miss the old town, a special place from history that's protected by UNESCO. It was the first European town in hot countries.

If you love culture, go to Sao Vicente Island. Mindelo is there, and it's famous for its "morna" music. Adventure seekers should check out Fogo Island. It has an active volcano called Pico do Fogo, and the views of lava fields and vineyards are amazing.

Climbing to the top of the volcano is something many visitors like to do. The islands have lots of paths for walking with something suitable for all abilities.
