Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has warned people not to write his side off and vowed that it is only a matter of time before the Reds are back to their best.

The Merseyside club have enjoyed a period of huge success under German boss Jurgen Klopp having ended their long wait for a Premier League title, whilst also claiming their sixth European crown. The former Borussia Dortmund head coach has also led the club to a succession of cup successes since his arrival.

Liverpool haven’t quite managed to match those levels this campaign. After winning just eight out of their opening 17 league games, they sit seventh in the table and already seven points off the pace in the race for a Champions League place.

Having played a full part for the Reds this term, Alexander-Arnold has claimed that his side’s previous success could have harmed them this season but has promised that they will bounce back sooner rather than later. Speaking to Sky Sports, the right-back said: “There’s a level of expectation now.

“I think it’s almost like that saying of being a victim of your own success. People expect us to be immaculate every season and we’re not allowed to have off seasons and there’s a level of consistency that’s demanded.

“I think we demand that from ourselves. So, it’s a season that we’ve not been happy with but there’s still a long time left.

“I wouldn’t say write us off in any means. There will come a time where things click into place and we will be back to where we have been and when that happens then everyone will be happy so it’s just a matter of time of doing that.

“We have to kind of go back to basics and find where the problems are and try and use them to our advantage and get back to what we know is Liverpool and playing like a Liverpool team.”

Alexander-Arnold has appeared in every Premier League match for Liverpool this season, scoring once and providing a further assist. Like his teammates, the 24-year-old has received his fair share of criticism for his defensive performances this term.

He and Liverpool will hope to get their revival underway in the second-half of the season starting with this weekend’s clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium. The Reds have a significant problem ahead of the trip to the South Coast however with Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez having picked up an injury.

Should he miss the game then that would see the Reds’ attacking options dwindle even further. Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have already spent long spells on the sidelines, whilst Brazilian frontman Roberto Firmino is also yet to return to training.
