MLS outfit Atlanta United are set to pocket a tidy sum from Newcastle star Miguel Almiron 's proposed transfer to Al-Shabab this month.

According to The Athletic, Atlanta inserted a 20-25% sell-on clause into the sale of the MLS league-record outbound transfer (£20.7 million) in the 2019 January deal. The Guardian reports the Magpies are looking to make a profit on the player, who turns 30 next month.

Newcastle would like to collect a £30m transfer fee for Paraguayan Almiron - a player who helped the St James' Park club finish fourth in 2022/23 with 11 goals. Should the Saudi club meet Newcastle's demands, Atlanta could see an additional £6m-£7.5m land in the bank. Almiron's MLS record transfer fee could be under threat from another Atlanta player, though. World Cup-winning Argentine Thiago Almada is tipped to be the next player to depart America for a big-money move to Europe.

After sending Atlanta their share of the spoils, Newcastle would still make a small profit on Almiron. The attacker isn't the only player who could be leaving the Magpies in January, with right-back Kieran Trippier a target for German giants Bayern Munich.

The England international, 33, could leave for just £12m in a cut-price deal to Bayern. Trippier would also be the third Englishman to join Bayern this season, following England captain Harry Kane and Eric Dier. Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has torn into his former club's transfer dealings with Trippier potentially following Dier.

"Bayern need more depth and reinforcements, but are these players reinforcements? Eric Dier wasn’t necessarily a key player at Tottenham recently," Matthaus told the Sky 90 podcast. "I remember Uli Hoeness (Bayern’s honorary president) once saying that, ‘We won’t be bringing in any more players who are sitting on the bench at other clubs’. The latest transfer looks different."

He added: "Kieran Trippier would be a similar case. That’s not Bayern Munich for me. Bayern should focus on reinforcements or on the young players. Aleksander Pavlovic sat out against Bremen and wasn’t substituted.

"When he did play, he was always outstanding. Bayern Munich have very good youth players and Christoph Freund (Bayern’s sporting director) is responsible for that. He has a good network. In the summer it was said, ‘We can let (Benjamin) Pavard and (Josip) Stanisic go and get someone else instead’, and then they didn’t get anyone else.

"As a result, they’ve got problems at right-back and in the center. They thought, ‘We’ll manage that’. No, they reacted too late. The team can’t find itself."
