We need an inquiry

Folk are right to smell a rat when the Tories resist a public inquiry into the brutal Battle of Orgreave during the 1984-85 miners’ strike for jobs.

Margaret Thatcher’s truncheon-wielding army of police cracked heads and mass arrested pickets in infamous scenes outside the coking works in South Yorkshire. Fresh evidence of how terribly some behaved casts doubt on convictions.

Theresa May, when Prime Minister, rejected an inquiry and Rishi Sunak will be of the same mind, terrified where a probe might lead.

The indefatigable Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign is confident an inquiry would discover another grave miscarriage of justice. It would reveal that the woman the Tories so revere deployed the full force of the state to crush striking miners by fair means...or foul.

Families and communities still live with the consequences of pit closures — lost jobs and lost hope, poverty and social problems. We deserve and need an inquiry into the Battle of Orgreave and wider conduct of that Thatcher Government during the strike.

Danger ops

It is truly shocking that The British woman who died after a botched weight-loss op in Turkey was just 20. Concern has been rising about fierce social pressures on women to fit a stick thin, glamorous stereotype lauded on TV shows such as Love Island.

Unless weight is a serious health issue, people must be reassured that it is OK to look different and that diets and exercise are safer than buying an air ticket. Cosmetic tourism surgery is a growing and dangerous trade that must be countered.
