Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa breaks silence after co-star Millie Gibson is dropped

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has broken his silence on social media after his co-star Millie Gibson was dropped from the show.

Millie, 19, who had previously starred in ITV soap Coronation Street, made her debut appearance as the Time Lord's assistant in the 2023 Christmas special. In May this year, Ncuti will take over the iconic role but Millie's character Ruby has been reportedly replaced by newcomer Varada Sethu for his second series. Once news emerged of Millie being dropped, the actor took to social media and shared a picture of him and Millie and penned: "My lil" accompanied by a heart emoji.

Millie is yet to speak out but an insider told the Mirror: "Millie Gibson has all but left now and there's a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn't letting the grass grow, that's for sure." It has been reported that Millie will be finishing up on the show over the next few weeks and will not appear in the 2024 Christmas special.

According to reports, Millie will appear in a few episodes before being replaced by Varada who is said to have already started filming at the Cardiff studios. Varada is probably bet known for playing DS Mishal Ali in the BBC TV Series Hard Sun and has also starred in Now You See Me 2 as Michael Caine character's assistant.

The news comes just weeks after Doctor Who fans saw Ncuti and Millie on screen together. Ncuti made his first appearance as The Doctor in the 60th Anniversary Special. This was when David Tennant, who was The Doctor at the time, "bi-generated" and two incarnations of the Time Lord were created.

One BBC source said: “Varada is a real gem, Russell was just blown away by her talent. The cast and crew have really warmed to her and he’s sure the fans will too.” Speaking of Millie's departure a source said:"Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure."

Millie is best known as Weatherfield’s troubled Kelly Neelan. She quit the soap in 2022 after three years on the cobbles and was announced as Ruby later that year. This week, while filming on Doctor Who has resumed in Cardiff following the Christmas break, the actress has been posting pictures from her holiday in Costa Rica.

On landing the role, the actress said at the time: "I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. Millie is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot wait to sail the universe with Millie.”

And showrunner Russell T Davies agreed: “It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent. As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday.”
