There are some big changes coming to how homes will access the web and make calls on the phone in the coming months with BT’s Openreach service confirming that it will no longer offer ageing analogue technology to new customers in a total of 46 new locations.

This basically means those moving suppliers or changing their address will be switched over to more modern Full Fibre technology in the future.

Full Fibre not only offers faster broadband but also makes sure homes are ready for the impending move over to digital voice calls.

For those not aware, BT is scrapping its existing analogue phoneline platform that comes into homes via copper wires by the end of December 2025. Everyone in the UK will need to have a digital phone line before then.

This is one of the reasons why Openreach is pushing ahead at pace to switch more people away from analogue it’s also expensive to run and maintain to services.

“As Openreach rolls out our ultrafast full fibre network across the country - it makes no sense to keep lots of different old technologies running – it’ll be very expensive, replacement parts are no longer being made, and it won’t allow the business to push forward with plans to give the UK world class connectivity as quickly as it would like,” the company said.

“The shift from copper to fibre will be every bit as significant as the move from analogue to digital and black and white tv to colour. By eventually retiring analogue phone lines, we will be creating a simplified network which allows us to meet the enhanced needs of an increasingly digital society.”

Here is the full list of new locations that will soon lose access to analogue for new customers.
