Joe Cole has urged Chelsea NOT to sell Conor Gallagher this month - as speculation builds over the midfielder's future.

Tottenham want to sign Gallagher, 23, thanks to his good form at Stamford Bridge. The England international has started all but one of their Premier League games this season and is captaining the team in the absence of injured pair Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Gallagher is an important member of Mauricio Pochettino's side, but that might not be enough to keep hold of him. Chelsea may need to balance the books this month due to the Premier League's financial rules and they could make a significant profit on Gallagher.

The Epsom-born star graduated from Chelsea's academy and is currently valued at £60million. He's also entered the final 18 months of his contract. Yet Blues legend Cole believes his former employers should keep hold of Gallagher until at least the summer.

That way, they can spend the next six months negotiating with Gallagher's representatives over a new long-term contract. Cole doesn't want to see Chelsea make the same mistake as Manchester City did four-and-a-half months ago when Cole Palmer left.

City sold Palmer, 21, to Chelsea for just £42.5m on deadline day. He's arguably the finest signing of Todd Boehly's ownership at Stamford Bridge - which started in May 2022 - having scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 23 appearances for the Blues.

"You've got to credit the boys for getting it over the line," Cole told TNT Sports after Chelsea's 1-0 home win against Fulham on Saturday. "Gallagher outstanding again. He must start February in a Chelsea shirt. I'm really pleased for Pochettino."

Cole then discussed the influence of Palmer, who scored the winner on Saturday. He added: "City don't make mistakes, but I think they have on this occasion. You want to come and watch him. Cole Palmer is going to be a massive player for this club."

Pochettino was recently asked about Gallagher's future at Stamford Bridge. He said: "It’s difficult for any coach to talk, it’s a decision by the club and the player.

"I’m coaching the team, trying to make the best choice as possible to perform. At the moment, so far, he’s doing well, fantastic for the team. He’s playing because he deserves. About the future, it’s about the club and player and what they decide to do.

"In my previous experience at other clubs, I try to give my best opinion and advice to the club. I’m a manager who likes to work with the sporting director and the owners. It’s about talking and analysing things, then taking the best decision for the club."
