Choosing a name for your baby can be one of the hardest decisions a parent will make, and deciding on something your child will have with them for their entire lives is a big deal.

Parents are usually influenced by social aspects around them when it comes to a baby's moniker, and as some opt for more traditional names others will go for something a little more unusual. As name trends come and go, there is one trend name experts predict will surge in 2024, and it's got an "earthy" feel to it as parents are going for names influenced by nature.

Many parents opt for an unusual name to make sure their child stands out, and this could be down to the influence of celebrities and parents' surroundings. As BabyCentre revealed the top 100 girls' and boys' names for 2023 in December, alongside some of the name trends that became increasingly popular over the last 12 months, the data from BabyCentre suggested that tree-themed monikers will rule the earthy choices. Names such as Hazel, Fern, Rowan, and Oakley made the list of top parents' choices.

Now, the expert parenting platform has exclusively told The Mirror that it expects parents in 2024 to be heavily inspired by various naturistic elements, with airy and earthy names "becoming more popular". Faye Mingo, spokeswoman for BabyCentre, has predicted a rise in both airy and earthy names for 2024 and has already seen a rise in popularity.

Speaking to The Mirror, she said: "Both airy and earthy names are becoming more popular. Think Ariel, Aurora, Celeste and Electra for airy girls and Sky, Storm, Gale, Phoenix and Sol for boys. Coming back down to earth we expect to see more girls named Hazel, Savannah, Fern and Gaia and more boys called Oakley, Rowan, Forest and Heath." Oakley was 61st and Rowan was 75th on the top 100 for boys names, and the experts suggest a rise in earthy names for 2024.

Plant-inspired and nature-themed names have always been a popular choice, in 2023, names such as Lily, Ivy, and Willow all made it into the top 10 for girls. These predictions were mirrored by Nameberry creator Pamela Redmond, who said atmospheric names were due to rise in popularity in 2024 too.
