Paul Scholes has labelled short corners "s***" after Ally McCoist questioned why Marcus Rashford was leaving the box for set-pieces in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Wigan.

Scholes posted on Instagram Stories shortly before the end of the match: "Short corners are s***", which was acknowledged by agreeing Man United fans on social media.

"I'm tired of that tactic," tweeted one fan, while another added: "absolutely," and a third said: "Quite true!" Scholes' comment came after McCoist hit out at the role Rashford was playing while providing commentary for ITV1.

"If they're not going to take a short corner then Rashford should be in the box. You're not going to score out there," said the Rangers legend, who prompted a debate on Twitter/X.

One fan tweeted in response: "McCoist is right, why would you waste Rashford on short corners to give it back to Bruno - if that's the tactic use someone else and have Rashford somewhere where he's a threat?"

While another responded: "Does anyone know why Rashford isn't in the box for the corner?! What sense does this make?"

A third said: "When Man United take a corner why is Rashford standing off the pitch next to the taker? Every forward should be in the box. Bizarre."

United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a routine 2-0 victory over League One Wigan but will be disappointed they didn't win by more.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring for the Red Devils before Bruno Fernandes doubled his side's advantage from the penalty spot a quarter of an hour before the end.

Man United were wasteful throughout the third-round tie with Wigan very much in the contest prior to Fernandes' spot-kick.

Summer signing Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay had several chances to put the game to bed in the first half with Rashford also failing to take his opportunities.

The Red Devils will play either Newport County or Eastleigh, who set up a replay following their 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade, in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
