Rats are invading homes across the UK after bin delays and floods as rodents swarm streets.

Millions of rats are appearing in homes across the UK as pest controllers are inundated by calls about the problem as vermin appear in households. They claim people had come back from the festive break to discover rodents had invaded their homes."

He said the vermin had been in people's properties while they've been away and their homes had been disturbed and things were not as they had been left. Caitlin Moran told how her home had faced an infestation of vermin in November.

She set up cameras and discovered the reason why rubbish was strewn across the floor overnight and found rats were coming into her home via the chimney. In the Times she said: "The first time I reviewed the overnight footage, I was treated to what was basically a Rat Studio 54, It was a big Rat Party. Rat Andy Warhol in the sink, with Rat Candy Darling walking all over the hob and Rat Grace Jones living it up on the table."

A union previously labelled Glasgow's rat problem a 'public health crisis' by a union, with refuse workers in the city reportedly dealing with it daily. The GMB Union, which represents the city's cleansing workers, said the issue is negatively affecting the mental health of workers due to the health risks posed by vermin.

The Mirror previously reported how Chris Mitchell from GMB Union expressed his concern: "I've been raising this issue for a number of years now. Telling the council that it's a daily occurrence. It's having a detrimental effect on our members mental health and wellbeing. It's becoming extremely dangerous."

He added: "Two years ago, we had two members that were hospitalised because of rat bites and scratches. And you look at leptospirosis, Weil's disease. It's a new risk assessment, it can kill you." Mitchell concluded: "So, this is becoming a public health crisis right across Glasgow."

An alleyway in Middlesbrough was also said to be overrun with rats and smells so bad that locals couldn't hang their washing out. One resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the problem was due to flytipping in the area. They said: "Although these alleys have lockable gates people are still managing to get rubbish in. People in other properties [...] also use it.

"I don't know who is doing it as most of the people along here are respectable. I rang the council again only yesterday and I hope they come today as it's getting beyond a joke."

The frustrated local continued: "There are rats having a wonderful time with dirty barbecues left from the summer. They are nesting in the filthy mattresses."
