Martin Brundle revisits 'car crash' F1 grid walk and shows his true colours

Martin Brundle has admitted his gridwalk interview with Machine Gun Kelly ahead of the Brazil Grand Prix was a "car crash".

The Sky Sports pundit memorably attempted to interview the singer-songwriter ahead of the race at Interlagos back in November. But the American was a reluctant speaker, with an incredibly awkward conversation ensuing between him and Brundle.

Brundle's gridwalks have become much-loved by viewers as the former F1 star talks with major celebrities ahead of races. But the broadcaster has now revealed that it is the drivers he likes talking to most, rather than the likes of Machine Gun Kelly.

"Oh my goodness, what a year it's been grid walking. I loved talking to Florence Pugh, for example, on the on the grid in Silverstone and Maria Sharapova in Abu Dhabi, just meeting nice people who are enjoying our sport," he told Sky Sports.

"And then I've had some car crash moments with Machine Gun Kelly and Shaquille O'Neal, whose answer was short and sweet, but nobody's ever called him short and sweet before, I don't think.

"I've maintained my position of never watching one, so I have no idea. I'll leave that for other people to decide, but it's nice to meet nice people. But actually I love talking to the drivers as well, because that's a unique sports broadcasting opportunity. So in the end, it will be quick interactions with drivers that I enjoy most."

Brundle's chat with Kelly was painful from the off. He originally asked the rapper "Tell us about your career at the moment" but had to repeat it three times before he got any sort of response.

But it was a baffling reply, with Kelly snapping: "I don't think about my career." Brundle then questioned him about Formula 1, with Kelly appearing to be happier to discuss that topic.

"I think your business is great," said the musician. "It's loud, your life is on the line and that's exciting. I was in a studio the other week and Lewis Hamilton was in the other studio. That was nice, yeah."

Bizzarrely, Kelly then requested that Brundle give him "his best air guitar". The broadcaster attempted to explain othat he was live on air and with a microphone in his hand, so could not comply.

The rapper did not take no for an answer though. Eventually, after also being rebuffed when he asked Brundle for an "air piano collaboration", Kelly simply stared into the camera, put his thumb down and walked away without saying another word.

Brundle couldn't help but giggle as he carried on his grid walk. "Something tells me I won't be on his Christmas card list," he said, before stopping at George Russell's car as Mercedes worked on the brakes.
