An Aldi washing powder that costs just £3.95 has been named the best product of the year by Which? magazine.

The budget Almat detergent ranked higher than a £449 laptop and 50p Asda baked beans and was praised for “being better at doing the job it's made for than more expensive rivals”. The full list of 50 products was revealed in the January issue of Which? magazine.

Its experts nominated their favourite items launched or tested in the last 12 months, before whittling down 4,000 products to just 50 based on value, innovation or efficiency. In second place was the £449 Lenovo laptop, which was rated for having a “speedy processor, solid specs and exceptional battery life” while “keeping costs down”.

In third place was the Currys Essentials CFSEBK22 freestanding cooker, priced at £209, which featured high up because it scored almost as much in Which? tests as the top model in its category, despite being £446 cheaper.

Harry Rose, Editor, Which? magazine, said: “How does a washing powder beat a top of the range smartwatch or flash electric car to be crowned Which?’s product of the year? Simply by being better at doing the job it's made for than more expensive rivals, while even managing to get ahead of the competition in areas like being less harmful to wildlife.
