Former Big Bang Theory star Kate Micucci recently revealed how she discovered she was diagnosed with lung cancer despite never having smoked a cigarette a day in her life.

Just a few days ago, the 43-year-old star took to social media updating her fans on her health as she revealed that she was in the process of recovering from surgery after the unexpected discovery that she had cancer in her lungs. In the comments of the viral TikTok, many fans questioned how exactly the actress was able to detect the cancer so early on.

After the shocking update, one fan asked Kate: "What made you go in to get it checked out? was it a general check up? or was there symptoms?" To which she explained: "I had one thing in my bloodwork that came back really high. So I went to a preventative doc who did a few scans. He scanned my heart and that’s where the spot in my lung was noticed."

Contrary to what many would expect there are actually many people that are diagnosed with lung cancer without smoking. Researchers have discovered that in these types of cases patients were affected by disease after exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, and other factors. In other cases many have been exposed to asbestos, diesel exhaust or other chemicals in the workplace.

Some of the most common signs patients notice before being diagnosed with lung cancer include a cough that does not go away or gets worse, chest pain, hoarseness, coughing up blood, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, as well as a number of other possible symptoms.

Fans took to the comments of the TikTok flooding the star with love and support as she recovers in the hospital. One fan wrote: "I'm a cancer survivor of 21 years now. Had Lymphoma in HS...You're so funny and artistic...wishing you a well recovery." Another sweetly added: "I’m so glad it was caught early and you’re on the road to recovery. You’re a national treasure and the world needs your wonderful self in it." And a third wrote: "I hope you feel better and recover as fast as possible you’re very strong."

Kate is famously known by fans from her role as Lucy in the hit 2000's series the Big Bang Theory. In the show, she plays a socially awkward young woman who meets Raj at a singles-only Valentine's Day party at a comic book store. The pair hit it off and date for a brief period until she ultimately breaks up with him after he becomes too overbearing for her to deal with.

Outside of the Big Bang Theory Kate starred in a number of other popular shows including Scrubs, The Little Hours, Raising Hope, Garfunkel and Oates, and most recently the Netflix horror series Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Thankfully Kate is doing well after the surgery and on the road to recovery hopefully to star in many shows to come.
