Horrid theory of Willy Wonka's intentions that will change your view of story

As film fanatics rush to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel, Wonkain cinemas, we take a look at the dark theory that may well change how you view the classic story forever.

Roald Dahl's children's novel was published way back in 1964, going on to enchant generations of little ones with its creative narrative and vivid descriptions of Wonka's factory. The subsequent film adaptations also hold fond nostalgic memories for so many of us, with this latest release looking set to be yet another tempting treat.

Although there are certainly some frightening moments in the tale - with the chocolate river boat ride scene from the 1971 musical adaptation continuing to frighten - the world of Wonka is usually viewed as being just as sweet as can be.

But one rather disturbing fan theory paints a very different picture of the eccentric chocolatier, however, and the argument is admittedly rather convincing. The story of course begins when Wonka hides golden tickets in chocolate bars for five lucky children to find, offering them entry into his top-secret factory.

Although Wonka's golden ticket plan has long been regarded as his attempt to pass his love of all things chocolate down to the next generation, some believe he had more sinister intentions in mind. Indeed, according to one popular fan theory, Wonka was in fact a 'Saw-like' serial killer who intended to murder his young guests.

The theory is explained on whatculture.com, which claims: "Enraged by the deception of his workers and the incessant spying of his competitors, and turned insane by years of self-imposed alienation, Willy Wonka decided to take his vengeance in Angry Deity style by murdering some of the world's children in a fiendishly complex plot. He intended all of the calamities that befall the children in the factory - hence his obvious apathy for their fates, and planned their punishment in a Saw-like skewed morality tale."

True, he doesn't seem that bothered when children are sucked up pipes and turned into fudge, blown up into giant blueberries or sent tumbling to their deaths in incinerators. Why did Charlie get off scot-free? Well, they believe Wonka chose him as the heir to his murderous throne, intending to show him the evil ways of the world.

The 'proof'

The site does make a valid point when it comes to proving the bizarre theory. "How else did the Oompa-Loompas have pre-prepared and heavily choreographed song and dance routines including the names of the victims? It was all carefully planned." You kind of can't argue with that, to be fair.

You can catch Wonka in cinemas nationwide from December 8, 2023 onwards
