A Southampton fan who suffered life-changing injuries in an accident at St Mary’s decided to have his life support switched off so his organs could be donated.
Simon Oakley passed away on November 13 after being seriously injured in a fall during Southampton’s game against Rotherham on October 7. Simon received CPR in the Itchen Stand while play was paused and was then rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he was placed in a coma.
The 59-year-old suffered a spinal injury which left him paralysed from the neck down. He woke up from his coma and was visited by Saints legend Francis Benali during his time in hospital. Soon after the visit, the father-of-four made the decision to have his ventilator switched off so that his kidneys and corneas could go to others. He chose to draw his last breath at 3pm on November 13.
“It was a very brave decision, and he did it all while being fully aware of his surroundings,” Simon’s brother Brian told The Daily Echo. “It’s an amazing and courageous thing to do, not a decision I could make.
“To give yourself up so that others could live, he will always be remembered for that. However sad his death makes us, he made us very proud of him. His last memory was of being in the place he loved: watching the Saints play.”

He was cared for at Southampton General Hospital (Naomi Baker/Getty Images)Brian had previously written a touching letter to the NHS staff who looked after his brother. It read: “On behalf of the Oakley family I would like to pass on our sincere thanks and gratitude to all medical and support staff in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital for the wonderful care and attention they afforded our youngest brother Simon following his tragic accident at St. Mary's Stadium on 7th October 2023 up until his death on 13th November. You all helped ease the pain over his final few weeks, for Simon, his relatives and friends.”
A photo of Simon was displayed before Saints’ match against Bristol City on November 29, while supporters were encouraged to sign a book of condolence. After his death a spokesperson from Southampton said: “Everyone at Southampton Football Club stands united in solidarity and extends our deepest condolences to the grieving family. Throughout this challenging journey, the Saints community, together with the club officials, have stood by the family, offering support and comfort.
“We are immensely grateful for the quick response and unwavering dedication of the stewards, paramedics, and medical professionals who played a crucial role in the immediate care provided. Additionally, we commend helpful actions of fellow supporters in the area, whose cooperation allowed for an effective medical response.
“We will continue to honour the memory of Simon and offer our support in any way possible during this difficult period. Rest in peace Simon. Once a Saint, always a Saint.”
