A military aircraft could be seen floating in the waters of Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii, apparently having fallen victim to an incident on the runway that caused it to make an emergency landing in the ocean.

The plane, which looks like a Boeing P-8 Poseidon, was reportedly carrying nine passengers, who all made it safely back to land, according to Hawaii News Now. No injuries were reported after the crew swam to shore.

What caused the incident remains a mystery, however. Hawaii News Now reports that it was a "runway incident" that occurred at around 2pm local time on Monday.

The incident occurred at Marine Corps Base Hawaii and was the result of a Navy plane overshooting the runway. Gunnery Sergeant Orlando Perez, a spokesperson for MCBH, said that it had been landing when it overshot the runway and landed instead in the bay. The base is approximately 10 miles (16km) from Hawaii's capital, Honolulu.

The Honolulu Fire Department reportedly responded to a "probable aircraft fire incident," but whether or not there was a fire or not remains unclear, as does the official status of all the passengers. The reports of minor injuries are unconfirmed.

Boeing P-8 Poseidons are generally used to hunt for submarines and conduct reconnaissance missions and intelligence gathering. It shares a number of parts with the popular 737 commercial jets.

On the day of the crash, it was reportedly cloudy and rainy, and visibility was just a mile (1.6km), according to National Weather Service meteorologist Thomas Vaughan.

The plane that crashed was the property of the Skinny Dragons of Patrol Squadron Four, which is stationed at Whidbey Island in Washington state. It appears to have been in Hawaii for training or some other form of MCBH operations.

No further information about the crash was immediately available.
