Russell Brand questioned by police over 'non-recent' sexual allegations

Russell Brand has been grilled by police officers over alleged historical sex offences.

The comic attended a police station in south London on Thursday, with the Met confirming a man in his forties was in attendance. The man was interviewed under caution. It comes after Russell, 48, has previously been accused of a rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse at the height of his fame – all of which he has strongly denied.

A spokesperson for The Met told the Mirror: "A man in his 40s attended a police station in South London on Thursday 16 November 2023. He was interviewed under caution by detectives in relation to three non-recent sexual offences. Enquiries continue."

Channel 4's Dispatches, The Times and The Sunday Times published the allegations on September 16th and 17th after four women came forward with claims of incidents taking place between 2006 and 2013 at the height of Brand's fame.

However, it is unclear as to whether his questioning by the cops is in relation to the allegations made in the documentary. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy who is heading the inquiry previously said: "We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us.

"We understand it can feel like a difficult step to take, and I want to reassure that we have a team of specialist officers available to advise and support." Meanwhile, two further complaints were recently made to the BBC since it launched its own review.

The nature of the allegations made by the two complainants have not been specified, but it means a total of five complaints have been made directly to the BBC. The update added: "It would appear that no disciplinary action was taken against Russell Brand during his engagement with the BBC in 2006-8 prior to his departure from the BBC."

After recent allegations, Russell issued a lengthy statement, including his denial: "What I seriously refute are these very, very serious criminal allegations. Also, it's worth mentioning that there are witnesses whose evidence directly contradicts the narrative that these two mainstream media outlets are trying to construct, apparently, in what seems to me to be a coordinated attack.

"Now, I don't wanna get into this any further because of the serious nature of the allegations, but I feel like I'm being attacked and plainly they're working very closely together. We are obviously going to look into this matter 'cause it's very, very serious."

The Mirror approached Russell for comment.
