When Paul Mullin left League One side Cambridge United for Wrexham in 2021, fans were shocked by his decision to drop down two divisions.

His decision now makes sense as he's become a global star on the Welcome to Wrexham TV series, and also been their main talisman since Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club. Former Millwall midfielder George Evans went step further though, when he joined Wrexham this summer.

The 28-year-old signed on a two-year contract in September after spending eight seasons in the Championship with Reading, Derby Country, and Millwall. He's made 12 appearances for Phil Parkinson's side this season and is loving life at the club despite playing at a much lower level.

Wrexham are flying in League Two this season, and are currently second in the table after only being promoted to the division earlier this year. They're five points behind leaders Stockport County, but are threatening a back-to-back promotion after spending the past 15 years in the National League.

The Red Dragons are a team mixed with youth, promise, and experience, with former Premier League players still in and around the squad even after Ben Foster's exit at the start of the season. James McLean and Steven Fletcher were brought in, and Evans was also a former Manchester City academy graduate.

It would usually be daunting for a player to drop down divisions in order to revive a career, but Evans didn't have to think twice about Wrexham. "I am loving my time here. When this opportunity came up, it was something I couldn't turn down," Evans told the Wrexham Leader.

"I am delighted to be here, it is a fantastic football club and I feel at home. It's a great set of lads, staff and everything about the club." The influence Reynolds and McElhenney have had on Wrexham has been groundbreaking, and even for someone that's been playing two divisions higher, Evans is keen to prove himself.

"I'm excited to be here but I'm not taking it lightly. Hopefully I put the performances in on the pitch and make sure I stay in the team and really kick on now because I'm loving it here, and get some more wins under our belt. We will keep working hard, we won't get ahead of ourselves.

"Each game is massive for us and if we can keep the momentum building and keep the run going, hopefully it will stand us in good stead come the end of the season. We have got to make sure we are at it every game."

Wrexham are unbeaten in 11 games across all competitions, with their last defeat coming against the League Two leaders on Sept. 23. They've only lost two games all season, and the Premier League dreams of Reynolds and McElhenney could be closer to reality by the end of the campaign.
