Manchester United are in a good place as they take a break from the Premier League to play Everton in the FA Cup on Friday night.

United have lost just one of their past 16 competitive matches in all competitions, with four clean sheets in four wins since returning from the World Cup break. After picking up a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday, Erik ten Hag has the opportunity to rotate his squad at Old Trafford on Friday night.

Everton visit in a very different situation, with Frank Lampard under a huge amount of pressure after the 4-1 thumping at home to Brighton on Tuesday night. The Toffees have won just one of their past 10 Premier League matches and the fanbase have begun to turn on Lampard.

The FA Cup is unlikely to be high on the list of priorities for Lampard, but he desperately needs a response from his players and a result against United to ease pressure. It will be a challenge because Everton have won only one of their past eight games against United in all competitions and just one of the past 29 at Old Trafford.

United have mixed team news coming into the tie. Donny van de Beek will be unavailable for this match – and for many to come – after suffering a serious knee injury in the win over Bournemouth. The club are fearing the worst for the Dutch midfielder.

“We have to wait, and then you can make the right diagnosis, so the medical team have to do their work,” Ten Hag said. “But it doesn't look great.”

Anthony Martial was substituted with a knock against Bournemouth, but is not expected to be sidelined. “Yes, I think he will be good. He will be fine,” Ten Hag said. “He continued the game. I hope he will recover overnight and be fresh for Friday.”

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has been boosted by the return to training of summer signing Antony, who missed the Bournemouth game with an unspecified injury. He was back in training on Wednesday and could be in line to feature, although the fact he has not scored or assisted since October may count against him.

Raphael Varane dropped down to the bench for the Bournemouth win, with Harry Maguire coming back into the side and Luke Shaw shifting to left-back. The France international could come back into the starting line-up to face Everton after having a breather.

“Varane covered some games and we know we have to manage him and keep him fit,” Ten Hag said on Tuesday. “He is a very important player for us and he is a leader and that is why he is having a game out.”

Lisandro Martinez was given a warm welcome when he came on as a substitute against the Cherries after returning from the World Cup. He could be handed a start against Everton.

Other players hoping to start are Scott McTominay, who didn’t get off the bench against Bournemouth and hasn’t played since getting 90 minutes against Burnley on December 21, Anthony Elanga, Fred and Tyrell Malacia. Cristiano Ronaldo ’s departure has left United short of options up front and, with Martial potentially not 100 per cent fit, Marcus Rashford could play centrally.

Alejandro Garnacho picked up another assist against Bournemouth and could be given a start as he tries to continue his momentum. Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan Bissaka and Christian Eriksen could be handed a rest.

Man Utd predicted XI: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Casemiro, McTominay; Garnacho, Fernandes, Elanga; Rashford
